Salida Saturday

My friend Chino and I daytripped out to Salida on Saturday - I finished sanding my board early that morning. The waves were fun - I knew that Julius was on the small side.  It floated me well - just too small for the conditions.  Chino had a nice long ride on it.  I switched to our wedding fish and stood up and surfed a bit on my first wave.  A pic of Chino's homemade board - foam with plywood skin (not veneer - this sucka is heavy).

Box

Pre bottom hotcoat fin box installation with glass patch filling between the laps. Just need to trim glass, hotcoat bottom, drill leash rope hole and sand.  This juicy piece of fruit is getting wet tomorrow in Salida, Colorado, 150 miles from home.

canvas complete

finished shaping last night and am pleased with the outcome.  had to learn to let scuff marks go as eps eagerly tears and shreds as evidenced in nose concave.  single sidelight shadow pic of vee tail and concaved nose.  cleanup/start glassing today.

NewYorkCity

157 year-old ale house two blocks from our apartment, fabrication of Lady Liberty, new WTC 1, Brooklyn Bridge, Donut Plant NYC, my two loves at Washington Square Park

Contour de Colorado

Mowing down all of the hotwire ridges to create my blank provided me with hours of planer etiquette practice.  Final refinement of shape is a 5'10" x 13 x 21 x 16 single fin.  I played with versions of a keiki simmons and a double-thumbed flying saucer before settling on this.  Concave nose and vee tail cut with well-behaved planer to give lift and rail sinkability to this beefy foamstock.

Seal team of one

Took the outfit for a test plunge in 58 F Clear Creek water in Golden.  Verified that I need a more buoyant board because every time I pushed to stand up I would sink the nose and get flushed out the back.  Big difference I see between river surfing and what I am used to is that a push-up increases drag and results in the board sinking pulling you off the standing rapid while pushing up on an ocean wave is sometimes what gets you over the ledge and into the drop.  I picture every bodyboarder I have seen doing that final board press to get themselves into a wave.
